| Area Information |
| The top of Vienna’s society has enjoyed the countryside around Schneeberg, Rax and Semmering since the middle of the nineteenth century. At that time Gutenstein and Reichenau were the main attractions, where nowadays the atmosphere of “the enchanting world of the magic mountains” is still created by many noble mansions and hotels. In Bad Schönau the local spa centre with the most intense carbonic baths in Europe offers treatment of cardiovascular diseases. The museum and the impressive spring, providing Vienna with mountain water for more than 100 years, attracts lots of visitors to Kaiserbrunn near Reichenau. Close to the hotel, a technical marvel of the 19th century can be admired - the Semmering Railway, the world's first mountain railway. This complex of viaducts, bridges and tunnels, set in a rugged and romantic mountain landscape, was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1999. The Semmering region is also known for its many sports and leisure opportunities, from mountainbiking and mountaineering in summer to all kinds of winter sports, including skiing in two first-class ski areas - Semmering and Stuhleck. A special highlight is the longest illuminated slope in Europe. |
